Global Labour University

The Global Labour University founded by ILO in 2004, supported by the Hans-Boeckler-Stiftung (HBS), the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) is essentially set up for developing and delivering high-level qualification programmes ". It is a new approach to strengthen the intellectual and strategic capacity of workers organizations and to establish much stronger working relationships between trade unions, the ILO, and the scientific community. It will strengthen labour movements and the values of the ILO's "Decent Work" agenda and enable workers organizations to engage more effectively in social dialogue on social and economic policy issues like employment, social protection, and the implementation of international labour standards.

The Global Labour University (GLU) network is offering a Masters Programmes in selected international institutions from each of the continents which includes,

  • Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India- Globalization and Labour.
  • University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), South Africa- Labour and Development, Economic Policy, Globalization and Labour.
  • The State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and the Institute of Economics, Brazil- Social Economy and Labour
  • University of Kassel (1st semester), Berlin School of Economics (2nd semester).Germany- Labour policies and Globalization

These unique global programmes are jointly developed by universities and workers organisations from around the world and aim at those candidates who are willing to assist organisations in these fields to engage more effectively in social dialogue, public debate, and policy implementation. Participants will analyze and discuss in a multidisciplinary fashion the challenges of globalisation from a labour and trade union perspective. The programmes offer a multi-cultural and multiregional environment with students and lecturers coming from developing, transition and industrialised countries.
